6 Aayaats of Sakinah

6 Quranic Verses that will bring Sakinah into your life

In the Arabic language, Sakinah (سكينة) is a word derived from the root sukun meaning “peace”, “serenity” or “tranquility”. According to Islamic spirituality, Sakinah is a gift of inner peace that Allah Ta’aala bestows on people who have Imaan, which then results in a further increase in faith. In our fast paced world, plagued by rising concerns about security, stability, financial meltdowns, family politics and devastating diseases, inner peace is a state sought by all, yet often found to be elusive.

Scholars of Islam point out that Sakinah is primarily achieved by adherence to an Islamic lifestyle, obedience to the commands of Allah Ta’ala, and avoidance of sins. Certain good deeds are also known to possess a greater likelihood of attracting tranquility form Almighty Allah into our lives.

Some of the most esteemed scholars from Islamic history would recite the Quranic verses that speak about tranquility during times of disturbance, and this proved to have a great effect.Ibn Al-Qayyim Rahmatullah alayhi said in his book Madaarij As-Saalikeen, “Whenever Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah Rahmatullah alayhi found things difficult, he would recite the verses mentioning tranquility. I heard him say about a difficult situation that happened to him during his sickness, ‘When I got very sick, I asked those who were around me to recite on me the verses that speak about tranquility. Once they did, I recovered completely.’”

Ibn Al-Qayyim Rahmatullah alayhi also said, “I read these verses and I found that they had a great influence on the assurance and tranquility of the heart.”Below are the 6 Ayaat of the Qur’aan that speak of Sakinah, and whose recital these scholars say have proven to be beneficial to draw tranquility into our lives:
